Nokia Networks, Ooredoo show 10 times faster upload with Centralized RAN at ITU event in Qatar

  • Doubles average uplink capacity across a cell
  • Extends smart phone battery life due to less interference

Doha, Qatar - At ITU Telecom World 2014, Doha, Qatar, 7-10 Dec 2014, Nokia Networks and Ooredoo demonstrate, how uplink capacity can significantly increase with Centralized RAN. During large events in stadiums, there can be more uplink than downlink traffic as people upload pictures and videos. Nokia's Centralized RAN links multiple LTE base stations to work directly with one another and doubles the average uplink capacity across a cell.
Higher upload speed, longer battery life
Multiple base stations provide coverage over a small area. This creates considerable interference from mobile devices, reducing network capacity and impairing service quality. Centralized RAN reduces interference between neighboring cells and allows up to 10 times faster uploads at the cell edge. Battery life of smart devices last longer as they don't need to transmit at high power to cut through the interference.

* Other demonstrations include:
LTE Broadcast: One of the important solutions demonstrated by Nokia Networks at ITU is its LTE Broadcast solution, evolved Multicast Broadcast Services (eMBMS). Nokia Networks is the first company applying LTE solution for efficient wide-area TV distribution, while other vendors focus on limited area distribution.
This solution is based on the company's Flexi Multiradio Base Station. Today, when people are watching videos over a mobile network, the video is individually streamed to each user. With LTE Broadcast, the same signal is received by many users at the same time, resulting in more efficient capacity and spectrum use. With this, operators can tap into new business models by offering TV distribution over the existing mobile infrastructure. The concept has significant potential to disrupt the TV distribution market, providing huge growth opportunities for mobile operators. With this solution, users will be able to receive streams also with devices that do not require SIM cards and broadcast traffic will not eat into their mobile data plan.
Voice over WiFi: This solution provides operator controlled voice over WiFi networks which is especially useful to provide the indoor coverage when LTE/2G/3G is not in place. As this solution uses same IMS core as VoLTE it provides operators with a new access (Wi-Fi) to extend voice on IMS through Wi-Fi applications. Operator controlled VoWiFi can be used as any other radio access from end user point of view. End user uses and shares only the phone number which is not the case with OTT voice services.
TDD-FDD Carrier Aggregation: With this technology, operators can combine their TDD- and FDD-LTE spectrum resources to increase downlink and uplink capacity for data-intensive applications such as video streaming, and they can balance the traffic load between TDD and FDD to make even more efficient use of their spectrums. Uplink is important for mass events like sports events, festivals, and concerts where a sudden burst uploaded videos and photos can increase traffic by 40 times.
Customer Experience Management (CEM): Nokia's CEM offering is an end-to-end approach that helps operators analyze, act upon and monetize the wealth of customer data available across their organization. Its CEM portfolio includes products and professional services which draw data from multiple sources, including the network, service and device performance, real-time subscriber experience and operator services. This helps operators support end-user demands at the right time and the right place, increasing the individual communications experience for every single customer. Nokia Networks is the first vendor to market a productized CEM umbrella solution, enabling operators to gain a single, integrated view of their customer experience at all its affiliates across regions or countries, and become more experience-driven organizations. CEM use case demonstrations will include Umbrella CEM, Device Portfolio Analyzer, CEM for Net Promoter Score, and CEM for traffic steering analytics. For more information, follow this link.
Predictive Operations: It is the world's first managed services for predicting mobile broadband service degradations 48 hours in advance, so they can be fixed before subscribers notice quality issues. The demonstration will show how future service degradation is identified with up to 95% accuracy, and improves service quality by 15%. The system analyzes big data patterns to support the human decision making with algorithms that monitor those patterns. An anomaly in those patterns leads to predictive alerts, which enable fixing issues before they affect subscribers. For more information, follow this link.
Telco Cloud: Dealing with unpredictable traffic growth and implementing new services faster for a superior customer experience - in a profitable way - are the main drivers for mobile broadband operators to move their networks to the Telco Cloud. Nokia Networks, a forerunner in developing Telco Cloud, has developed and tested virtualized network elements and cloud application management together with end-to-end services to support the migration and demonstrate the readiness of cloud technology for commercial deployment. Nokia's core software and telco cloud management systems are hardware-independent and cloud platform agnostic, so operators can take full advantage of the cloud paradigm.
Flexi Zone: Nokia Flexi Zone enables operators to build mobile broadband capacity by deploying clusters of access points in hot spots and across hot zones. The award-winning Flexi Zone is an LTE/Wi-Fi-capable solution engineered to complement macro networks in busy urban areas by adding significant capacity via an underlay of small cells at the street and indoor level. Flexi Zone creates a zone covered by a cluster of low-power access points connected to a local zone controller that provides significant performance benefits, macro co-existence, traffic offloading, simplified backhauling and low O&M impact. This configuration enables operators to provide a remarkably rich customer experience in the most challenging urban capacity problem areas while delivering a total cost of ownership that is considerably lower than traditional small-cell deployments.
Security Solutions for LTE: Together with Juniper, Nokia will showcase security solution for LTE networks. Advanced security solutions are a differentiator for Nokia. The company will demonstrate its 3GPP-compliant security solution built specifically for LTE. The solution secures the data between the LTE base station and the core network with IP security (IPSec) using VPN tunnels. In addition, strong certificate authority using Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) ensures only operator-authorized base stations can access the network.
In LTE networks, the air interface encryption is terminated at the LTE base station (eNodeB) in the cell site. In UMTS, the air interface encryption reaches to the Radio Network Controller (RNC) which resides in network operator premises. Therefore, in order to reach an equal level of security as in previous generations of mobile networks, LTE requires additional security for the mobile backhaul.
The Nokia Radio Access Transport Security Solution extends standard solutions to the latest firewall and VPN technology and state-of-the-art protection of Mobile Networks against advanced threats. Key benefits of this solution include improved customer loyalty and operational cost saving.
