iTunes U Content Tops One Billion Downloads

Apple - Press Releases - February 28, 2013
iTunes U Content Tops One Billion Downloads
CUPERTINO, California―February 28, 2013―Apple® today announced that iTunes U® content downloads have topped one billion. iTunes U features the world’s largest online catalog of free educational content from top schools and prominent libraries, museums and organizations helping educators create courses including lectures, assignments, books, quizzes and more for iOS users around the world.

“It’s inspiring to see what educators and students of all types are doing with iTunes U,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services. “With the incredible content offered on iTunes U, students can learn like never before―there are now iTunes U courses with more than 250,000 students enrolled in them, which is a phenomenal shift in the way we teach and learn.

More than 1,200 universities and colleges, and 1,200 K-12 schools and districts host over 2,500 public and thousands of private courses encompassing the arts, sciences, health and medicine, education, business and more. Leading universities including Duke, Yale, Cambridge, MIT and Oxford continue to extend their reach by enrolling more than 100,000 students in single iTunes U courses, with Stanford University and The Open University each surpassing 60 million content downloads. The Ohio State University’s Matthew “Dr. Fus” Stoltzfus’ General Chemistry course enrolled over 100,000 iTunes U students in the first year it was offered.

“The interest my iTunes U course receives from non-college students is overwhelming,” said Professor Stoltzfus. “I’ve been working with high school teachers who use my iTunes U material to prepare to teach their own classes, high school students all over the world who are leveraging the course to tutor their fellow classmates, even retirees who download my iTunes U course to stay intellectually active.

Over 60 percent of iTunes U app downloads originate from outside the US, giving schools of any size the ability to share their content with a worldwide audience. The unmatched global reach of iTunes U gives educators, like University of California, Irvine Professor Dan Stokols, international recognition and acclaim in their fields.

“Because of iTunes U, I have been able to introduce students and colleagues in China to research on the links between chronic multi-tasking, information overload and stress; discuss research publications and degree programs with students in Europe; and exchange information about the influence of neighborhood design on community levels of physical activity and obesity with students in Australia,” said Professor Stokols, whose Environmental Psychology course enrolls over 170,000 students on iTunes U. “The opportunity to impact so many students who are gaining interest in environmental psychology by taking my free course on iTunes U has been highly rewarding and gratifying for me as an educator and learner.

“I see success unfolding before me on a daily basis,” says Chrissy Boydstun, a teacher from Mansfield Independent School District in Texas which provides each of their over 10,000 high school students and faculty with an iPad®.“Students are engaged and working hard as they use the incredible amount of information at their fingertips in a way that is meaningful and impactful. I love the way iTunes U provides a roadmap to take students beyond what a typical lesson or lecture could achieve.

Educators can create iTunes U courses in 30 countries including recent additions: Brazil, South Korea, Turkey and United Arab Emirates. These courses, and other education content, can be accessed via the iTunes U app in 155 countries. In addition to thousands of individual iTunes U learning materials, over 75,000 educational apps are now available for iOS devices on the App Store℠. Additionally, with the free iBooks® Author app on the Mac® App Store, writers and publishers continue to bring ideas and stories to life sharing more than 10,000 original Multi-Touch™ books with the world.

Apple designs Macs, the best personal computers in the world, along with OS X, iLife, iWork and professional software. Apple leads the digital music revolution with its iPods and iTunes online store. Apple has reinvented the mobile phone with its revolutionary iPhone and App Store, and is defining the future of mobile media and computing devices with iPad.

HP Helps Manufacturers Improve Product Safety and Recycling

HP - Press Releases - February 28, 2013
HP Helps Manufacturers Improve Product Safety and Recycling
HP Compliance Data Exchange enables tracking of materials in complex supply chains

BĂ–BLINGEN, Germany -- Hewlett-Packard GmbH today announced the new HP Compliance Data Exchange (CDX) system , a platform that enables manufacturers in sectors like shipbuilding, aerospace and electronics to eliminate hazardous substances from their products and improve recycling rates.
Based on the HP-hosted International Material Data System (IMDS), which is already delivering measurable results for the automotive industry, HP CDX enables manufacturers to stay ahead of new requirements, plan design improvements and meet the increasing number of globally valid legislative requirements, such as the Hong Kong Convention; the European Union’s Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive; and the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and restriction of CHemicals (REACH) regulation.
Under a recent agreement, members of the Sustainable Shipping Initiative (SSI), including Carnival, China Navigation and Maersk, will use HP CDX in several pilot projects to track the manufacturing supply chains of new lines of ships, or significant parts thereof, from tier-one suppliers down to suppliers of base components like screws, electronic components, coatings and paints. The SSI is a coalition of shipping leaders from around the world working to demonstrate that shipping can contribute to—and thrive in—a sustainable future.
“Companies in all industries are increasingly required to reduce the use of hazardous substances in their products and minimize energy and resource waste through more efficient recycling of resources,” said Dirk Schuermann, industry director, HP Enterprise Services. “By collecting, maintaining and analyzing material data across all levels of the supply chain, HP’s CDX can enable participating companies to comply with global legal requirements.
HP CDX provides a secure, centralized database and application to record and track material usage through complex global supply chains. The web application acts as a venue for information exchange between manufacturers, their suppliers and their suppliers’ suppliers about the substances used in all components. For example, HP CDX makes it possible to prove that an engine within an assembled ship consists of an allowable range of materials and substances. At the same time, it stores information for future recycling to ensure safe disposal.
Using HP CDX, manufacturers and their supply chain can share information securely in real time about all materials present in the final product, helping to eliminate hazardous substances and ensuring that reportable substances are declared for recycling. Instead of each company keeping its own records, the central CDX database is easily accessible, efficient and low cost. It also helps manufacturers build robust, efficient compliance strategies for legislation such as extended producer responsibility (EPR), which requires manufacturers to be financially and legally responsible for the life-cycle impact of their products on the environment.

SAMSUNG Showcases Smart Signage Platform at DSE 2013

Samsung - U.S.News - Press Releases - February 27, 2013
SAMSUNG Showcases Smart Signage Platform at DSE 2013
Integrated, open-source platform is designed to simplify the digital signage deployment process and enable dynamic, cost-efficient message delivery
Las Vegas – February 27, 2013 – Samsung Electronics America Inc., a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics Corporation and the number one worldwide provider of commercial LCD displays according to DisplaySearch, is showcasing the Samsung Smart Signage Platform , a new open-source digital signage platform, among its latest technology innovations at the Digital Signage Expo (DSE), this week at the Las Vegas Convention Center, Booth #902.

Samsung’s Smart Signage Platform is designed to simplify the digital signage deployment process while facilitating the growth of a new application ecosystem with leading software developers and content providers. Available on select Samsung large-format displays launching this year, the Smart Signage Platform is an integrated, open-source platform built around an embedded media player and software developer kit (SDK).

“Samsung’s legacy in commercial display technology, as well as our leadership in advanced semiconductor solutions, allows us to bring this unique open platform technology to the digital signage market,” said Tod Pike, senior vice president at Samsung’s Enterprise Business Division . “Samsung’s Smart Signage Platform allows developers to create apps that enable seamless delivery of dynamic content and messaging. We are already actively engaged with a number of the leading content developers and look forward to welcoming more onboard in the coming months.”

Collaborative Application Ecosystem

Samsung’s new SDK for signage software allows software partners to develop customized signage applications suitable for an array of business and user environments. Backed by best-in-breed software developers and solution providers, including Capital Networks, Four Winds Interactive, Scala, Signagelive and Wireless Ronin, customers will have access to signage experts to help create customized solutions.

Samsung’s Smart Signage Platform is designed to provide a simpler path to deployment for organizations that are looking to transition from static signage to dynamic digital displays.

As a cloud-based solution, the Smart Signage Platform has the ability to locally or remotely send content from a web server directly to a display. This enables software providers to distribute software updates and changes directly to displays that are connected to the platform, offering customers with a quick and efficient solution for keeping content fresh and targeted for the unique needs of their end users.

Comprehensive, Cost-Effective Solution for Businesses

The Samsung Smart Signage Platform provides a simple, easy-to-use interface, eliminating complicated set-up and installation processes.

Powered by a System on Chip (SoC) semiconductor and featuring a dual-core CPU, full codec video processor and either 4GB or 8GB of storage depending on the model, Samsung’s Smart Signage Platform includes an embedded, high-performance media player which allows users to play back content without the need for a separate PC or set-back box. By eliminating the need for external devices, the Samsung Smart Signage Platform ensures clean and simple installation and operational processes, saving both time and money. The technology also supports open pluggable standard (OPS) platforms.

The Smart Signage Platform is compatible with the 2013 lines of the following Samsung digital signage products:

• ME – C Series – these ultra slim, lightweight displays provide increased energy savings of 35% or more over CCFL backlit displays, while a thin chassis and narrow bezel help simplify installation and provide a more impactful message.

• PE – C Series – a line of ultra-slim large format displays ideal for high-traffic areas that require 24/7 reliability, including commercial, public and corporate environments. These displays feature LED backlighting for brighter, more colorful images and anti-glare technology that offers a sharp picture, even in brightly lit indoor environments.

• MD – C Series – ideal for high-traffic areas, including commercial, public and corporate environments, the design elements of these displays facilitate enhanced performance with the added benefit of cost-savings. At just 19mm, a narrow bezel allows audiences to focus more on the content, and the slim depth of the series offers more available space for other uses.

For more information on the Samsung Smart Signage Platform, visit Samsung at DSE Booth #902 .

Samsung will also be presenting several seminars and presentations at DSE addressing the Smart Signage Platform and other market trends.

New York Calling : A Smart Phone-Inspired Bag from Alexander Wang and Friends

New York Calling : A Smart Phone-Inspired Bag from Alexander Wang and Friends
by Esther Adams
Put it down to being a Generation Xer that Alexander Wang’s design language naturally puts out, and picks up, fast-paced digital signals. (Not only does the designer jot down thoughts and inspirations on his smart phone that filter through to his collections, but T’s spring campaign, featuring MADtv’s controversial character Bon Qui Qui, was also a viral sensation.) So when it came to thinking up an eye-catching image to feature on a limited run of Wallie Gym sacks, with proceeds going to Art Start (a New York–based charity that nurtures the burgeoning talents of disadvantaged youth), Wang called on the help of a coterie of inspiring friends . . . and their cell phones. Model Aymeline Valade, photographer Craig McDean, and interior designer Ryan Korban were among the thirty tastemakers who whipped up dynamic Technicolor designs on their sleek Samsung GALAXY Note IIs for the altruistic project. Wang then morphed each technologically manipulated sketch, and used his own Samsung device to create a singular abstract cityscape-style print for the final leather bag. The results? A practical, feel-good tote that, says Wang, embodies the “constant motion, change, and speed of New York.”

Vermont Awards HP $48 Million Medicaid Agreement

HP - Press Releases - February 27, 2013
Vermont Awards HP $48 Million Medicaid Agreement
As Vermont’s fiscal agent, HP helps state prepare for healthcare reform

PALO ALTO, Calif. — HP Enterprise Services today announced that the Department of Vermont Health Access has signed a $48 million contract to continue its 31-year relationship with HP as the state’s Medicaid fiscal agent.
The new four-year agreement includes services that assist the state in reaching its healthcare reform goals.
The agreement covers the relocation of Vermont’s current Medicaid Management Information System (MMIS) to a state-of-the-art HP data center.HP also will upgrade provider call-center technology, which will improve customer service by reducing hold times and dropped calls, as well as enhance the efficiency of call routing and increase business-continuity capabilities.
A shared-solution environment allows the state to leverage HP’s knowledge and investment in the healthcare market to improve flexibility and provide increased scalability and security. Vermont will expand its use of the HP Medical Assistance Provider Incentive Repository (MAPIR) tool to track “meaningful use” incentive payments to providers. In addition, HP will remediate the current system to be compliant with ICD-10 in support of HIPAA national standards.
HP and the state have integrated Vermont Medicaid with 25 other healthcare programs under a single-processing environment supported by the MMIS. This enables the state to maximize federal funding and reduce administrative overhead.
Under the agreement, HP continues to provide Vermont with claims processing, financial management, drug rebate processing, system maintenance and modification, and provider services, including enrollment, education and call center support for all 26 healthcare programs.
Last year alone, HP processed more than 9.6 million Vermont healthcare claims for approximately 166,000 recipients, distributing more than $1.1 billion in Medicaid and other payments to nearly 12,000 healthcare providers. HP call centers fielded more than 141,000 provider calls last year.
“The state of Vermont needed to be prepared for and adapt to a nationwide healthcare transformation,” said Susan Arthur, vice president, U.S. Health and Life Sciences Industry, HP Enterprise Services. “The HP team helped develop a powerful and reliable Medicaid infrastructure that will enable Vermont to provide for those in need while maintaining fiscal responsibility.
HP is the nation’s largest provider of Medicaid and Medicare process management services, administering $140 billion in benefits a year. It serves as the fiscal agent or principal IT provider for Medicaid in 21 states. HP’s U.S. health care experience spans payer, government and life science communities.
HP’s premier Americas client event, HP Discover , takes place June 11-13 in Las Vegas.
