Nokia wins People's Republic of China Friendship Award for TD-LTE contribution
Chinese Vice Premier Ma Kai confers award upon Markus Borchert, president of Greater China region at Nokia Networks
Achievement underlines Nokia's outstanding contribution to standardization, globalization of 4G/TD-LTE technology
Beijing, China - Nokia today received the prestigious People's Republic of China Friendship Award hosted by the country's State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs. Markus Borchert, president of the Greater China region at Nokia Networks, accepted the award from Ma Kai, Vice Premier of China, for the company's long-standing commitment and dedication to developing the TD-LTE technology standard. This is the highest level recognition awarded by the Chinese government to non-Chinese experts for their contributions to the country's economic and social progress.

Nokia is a pioneer in driving the technology and global market development for TD-LTE, resulting in the creation of a rich worldwide ecosystem and a large supply chain in China. In 1998, Nokia was the first international company to strongly promote TD-SCDMA and TD-LTE as global standards. Since then, it has built up the full value chain for TD-LTE including product management, research and development, manufacturing, logistics, global marketing, sales and services in the country.

"This award is a wonderful recognition of Nokia's long-standing commitment to create win-win outcomes between China and Europe by jointly innovating and developing global markets with TD-LTE technology, which is being adopted on all continents around the globe. This technology is an important enabler for social and economic growth in China, and we are proud of our leadership position here. This achievement marks an important milestone in our journey towards becoming the top foreign telecommunications vendor in the country," said Markus Borchert.

"Since 1998, we have worked in close collaboration with the Chinese government, academia and the operator community to strengthen the foundation of TD-LTE. I dedicate this award to the Nokia team for wholeheartedly supporting the Chinese government in its endeavors to further enhance the growth potential of the communications industry and generate employment opportunities in the country."

China Mobile, the world's largest wireless operator, recently recognized Nokia as its largest non-Chinese 4G network vendor and ranked Nokia as a leader in the quality assessment of its commercial TD-LTE network. Nokia also won the Outstanding Contribution to TD Technology Award presented by the Telecommunication Development Industry Alliance (TDIA).

BlackBerry Named a Leader in Enterprise Mobile Management
BlackBerry achieves the highest score in the “Strategy” category
Waterloo, ON – BlackBerry Limited (NASDAQ: BBRY; TSX: BB), a global leader in mobile communications, today announced that it has been named a “Leader” in The Forrester Wave™: Enterprise Mobile Management, Q3 2014.
Forrester Research, Inc. evaluated BlackBerry along with 14 other of the most significant mobile device management vendors. BlackBerry earned the highest score in Strategy as well as Global Presence, and tied for the top ranking in Market Presence, which considers revenue, install base and partners. In addition, BlackBerry received the highest possible score in 12 of the 27 criteria measured by Forrester, including Network Security, Future Vision, and Support.
According to Forrester Research, “As other vendors have rushed to offer competitive alternatives to BlackBerry’s platform, the company has had to reinvent itself around the characteristics that made it a Leader previously - and its strong commitment to enterprise mobility and security has paid off.”
“Security is our cornerstone and BlackBerry remains laser focused on developing and delivering the solutions enterprises around the globe have come to expect from us,” said John Sims, President, Global Enterprise Services, BlackBerry. “Our mobility solutions are in government agencies and enterprises around the world because customers trust the experience we’ve built over the decades. With current and future BlackBerry offerings, we will leverage our experience in security to create solutions that meet the evolving needs of our customers, from cross-platform support for BYOD programs to the management of Internet of Things.”
Forrester Research also noted in the report, “Continued investments in collaboration applications and a strong vision that incorporates a strategy for Internet of Things management and automotive support have placed BlackBerry in a Leader position.”
Today BlackBerry is the dominant mobile device management (MDM) leader with more customers than its top three competitors combined. Since the EZ Pass migration program launched on March 31, 2014, 3.4 million new BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 (BES10) client access licenses have been claimed by customers worldwide. More than 840,000 of these licenses have been traded in from competitors’ MDM platforms.
To achieve this position and increase the value that BlackBerry brings to customers, the company continues to make investments and expand beyond MDM capabilities into other value-added services. Recent highlights of this strategy include:
  • The acquisition of Movirtu, a provider of virtual identity solutions. Movirtu’s technology allows multiple numbers to be active on a single device in order to improve device management and provide split billing for voice, messaging, data and applications.
  • The launch of BBM Protected, the first solution in the eBBM™ Suite for secure enterprise-class messaging. This service brings regulated industries the most secure and reliable real-time mobile messaging experience in the industry by offering an enhanced security model for BBM messages sent between BlackBerry smartphones.
  • The establishment of the BlackBerry Technology Solutions (BTS) business unit. This group comprises of the company’s innovative technology assets, including QNX (embedded software), Project Ion (Internet of Things application platform), Certicom (cryptography applications), and Paratek (RF antenna tuning), as well as BlackBerry’s extensive patent portfolio. BTS will focus on the company’s long-term growth strategy on the Internet of Things and will maximize BlackBerry’s intellectual property and patents to create operational synergies and new revenue streams.

Source: BlackBerry - Press Releases - September 24, 2014
BlackBerry Passport Redefines Productivity for Mobile Professionals with Boundary-Breaking Design and Features
1:1 Aspect Ratio and Touch-Enabled Keyboard Challenge Industry’s Status Quo
Waterloo, ON – Continuing its strategy to arm mobile professionals with tools that make them more productive, BlackBerry Limited (NASDAQ: BBRY; TSX: BB), a global leader in mobile communications, today launched the BlackBerry® Passport. Featuring a large square touch screen and new QWERTY touch-enabled keyboard, the BlackBerry Passport is a device purpose-built for productivity-driven business professionals who want a smartphone that empowers them with the mobile tools they need to get things done, without sacrificing style or portability.
“As we set out to design BlackBerry Passport, we were guided by a simple yet challenging idea – to set aside the limitations of traditional design and to instead simply build a device that fundamentally changes the way business professionals get work done on their smartphone,” said John Chen, Executive Chairman and CEO at BlackBerry. “The BlackBerry Passport was created to drive productivity and to break through the sea of rectangular-screen, all-touch devices.”

BlackBerry Passport
Thoughtful Design for the Mobile Professional
Inspired by actual passports, the universal symbol of mobility, the size and form factor of BlackBerry Passport is portable enough to easily tuck into pockets and use wherever you go. Utilizing premium, robust materials such as Corning® Gorilla® Glass 3 for the display and forged stainless steel for added strength, BlackBerry Passport will provide the durability business professionals require in a smartphone.
The large square screen is optimized for viewing and creating content, and will make everyday tasks like reading and writing emails, reviewing and editing documents, web browsing, and map navigation, more comfortable and effortless. The BlackBerry Passport includes the industry’s first touch-enabled keyboard with gestures that make typing, editing and navigating more efficient and accurate. BlackBerry's physical QWERTY keyboards have always made it easier for users to create polished, professional communications with exceptional accuracy. BlackBerry Passport's new QWERTY keyboard is almost four times more accurate than BlackBerry® 10 virtual keyboards – the error rate is on average 74% lower – so there are fewer typos to get in the way of what you’re trying to say.
The BlackBerry Passport along with Porsche Design P’9983 smartphone from BlackBerry®, are the first devices to launch on BlackBerry’s latest OS platform, BlackBerry® 10.3. They come preloaded with new productivity-enhancing features including BlackBerry® Blend and BlackBerry® Assistant, as well as the BlackBerry® World™ storefront and Amazon Appstore, offering access to the very best apps for work and play.
BlackBerry Blend
BlackBerry Blend brings messaging and content that is on your BlackBerry smartphone to your computer and tablet. Get instant message notifications, read and respond to your work and personal email, BBM™ or text messages, and access your documents, calendar, contacts and media in real time on whatever device you are on, powered by your BlackBerry. BlackBerry Blend is being introduced on the BlackBerry Passport and will work across desktop operating systems, including Mac OS X 10.7 +, Windows® 7+ and Android™ tablets running Android 4.4+ via cellular, USB or Wi-Fi connections. BlackBerry is also working to bring the Blend experience on other tablets soon. The downloadable version of BlackBerry Blend for Macs and PCs is available today at www.BlackBerry.com/Blend, on the Apple® App StoreSM for iPad tablets, or via the Google Play™ Store for Android tablets.
Highlight features of the BlackBerry Passport include:
  • Large High-Resolution Square Screen – The BlackBerry Passport includes a 4.5” square screen with a 1:1 aspect ratio, 1440x1440 pixel (453 dpi) HD display and Corning® Gorilla® Glass 3 for added strength.

  • Dual app storefronts for a Wealth of Professional and Popular Apps
- BlackBerry World – BlackBerry World showcases essential productivity apps for business professionals looking to drive efficient communications and collaboration.
- Amazon Appstore – Preloaded on BlackBerry Passport, users can access popular consumer apps through the Amazon Appstore, including the latest Android games and apps, such as Minecraft - Pocket Edition, Candy Crush Saga, Pinterest, Temple Run 2 and Cut the Rope 2.
  • BlackBerry Assistant  The BlackBerry Assistant is BlackBerry’s first digital assistant and can be used with voice and text commands to help users manage work and personal email, contacts, calendar and other native BlackBerry 10 applications. BlackBerry Assistant intelligently determines how to respond to you based on how you interact with it – if you type, it responds silently, if you speak, it speaks back and if you activate over Bluetooth, it speaks back with additional context because it assumes you might not have access to the screen.
  • Premium Components – The device is built for the most demanding user using durable materials mixed with top-of-the-line technology, including a Quad Core 2.2 GHZ Processor, 3 GB RAM, 13 MP OIS rear camera and 32 GB memory.

TIM Brasil delivers great network performance at global football event

Source: Nokia - Press Releases - September 16, 2014
TIM Brasil delivers great network performance at global football event
Nokia Networks provides mass event features to handle mega event, successfully manages 1TB in data traffic and approximately 21,000 hours of voice calls
São Paulo, Brazil  - TIM Brasil, the Brazilian subsidiary of Telecom Italia Mobile, entrusted Nokia Networks to manage its network during the world's premier football event organized in the country. With Nokia Networks' market-leading solutions and Special Event Support, the operator offered unmatched voice and data services to its subscribers, while effectively dealing with the huge amount of data traffic generated at the event.

"A showcase sporting event of this scale witnesses a large congregation of subscribers generating immense amount of network traffic within a limited area and time - which represents a challenge and an opportunity for us," said Marco Di Costanzo, director of mobile networks at TIM Brasil. "Nokia Networks met the challenges posed by the data deluge, while enabling us to provide a rewarding service experience to subscribers. As our worldwide key LTE supplier, Nokia Networks has extensive knowledge and experience to support us in delivering flawless network performance."

With 59 network sites installed across 5 stadiums serving over a million visitors, Nokia Networks successfully managed 1 TB in data traffic and approximately 21 thousand hours of voice calls generated by TIM Brasil's users during the course of the event. More importantly, the company maintained an impressive accessibility performance rate* - a factor that is critical in terms of ensuring better connectivity, fewer call drops and a superior communications experience.

In addition to having the expertise to plan and execute, Nokia Networks also has new mass event features to handle mega events, manage the uplink challenge caused by people uploading materials to social media, and ensure that voice calls can get through. Among these, the company deployed its Mass Event Handler and Voice Call Priorization features for TIM Brasil's network. With this, the operator had complete network availability at potential hot spots and was able to maintain the highest level of services in spite of the significant increase in voice and data traffic.

"With a team working across Brazil, Portugal and Italy, we were extremely focused and precise in our preparation for TIM Brasil's network infrastructure for this global event," said Francesco D'Angelo, head of customer business team at Nokia Networks. "The end result is a strong testimony of our capabilities in providing communications support to large-scale events. It also underscores the fact that our technology is geared up to deal with capacity challenges."

Nokia's NetAct network management system will monitor, manage and optimize the operator's multi-technology networks.
"This deal hits a large number of evolving managed services sweet spots, including the need for strong service performance, customer experience, security and optimization in what is an increasingly multi-vendor and multi-technology environment," said Kris Szaniawski, Lead Analyst, Intelligent Networks, Ovum. "As the telecom network services industry experiences a second wave of managed services contracts, we see increased pressure on existing managed services relationships to become more customer-focused and deliver improved service quality. As a consequence there are significant opportunities for vendors such as Nokia Networks to deepen and strengthen their relationships with operators and position themselves as close strategic partners."
In the first half of 2014, Nokia Networks boosted its managed services business by winning several new contracts and renewing expiring contracts in Asia, Middle East, Africa, Europe and Latin America. Many of the deals are multi-vendor and multi-technology by nature, spanning across 2G, 3G and LTE technologies. In our current managed services contracts, two out of three contracts are multi-vendor. Altogether, these contracts are covering approximately 200 million subscribers and 35000 sites. About 40% of these subscribers are supported by operators who are new managed services customers to Nokia Networks.
Nokia Networks has strong experience in managed service business for over 15 years. Today, the company is managing more than 230000 sites and 500 million subscribers across the world.
